A standout defensive basketball player for Indiana State Sycamores during the late-1970s, Carl Nicks played a big role teaming with basketball legend Larry Bird in helping ISU reach the 1979 NCAA Championship Game. After playing his freshman season at ISU , Carl Nicks transfered to Gulf Coast Community College in Florida for his sophomore year where he led the team in scoring - 22.4. He then decided to return to Indiana State for his junior season, 1978-79.
Upon Further Review:
Although Carl Nicks connected on just 4 of 13 field goal attempts in the Sycamores 76-74 win over De Paul in the 1979 NCAA quarterfinals, his all-around guard play with assists and defensive coverage received praise from ISU coach Bill Hodges. 'Stats don't tell the whole story. I've asked my players not to be upset with their play until they watch the game film,' Hodges said after the win over DePaul. 'I bet Carl did things which made up for any lack of effort at the offensive end.'
NBA Report:
Drafted by the Denver Nuggets upon finishing college in 1980, Carl Nicks had four fine years in the NBA.
