Upon further review ‘The Starting Five’

 

One of the best balance college basketball teams during the

1950s, the Iowa Hawkeyes ‘Starting Five’ were the only

set of starters to score an average per game of double digit

numbers.

 

Season Opening – Iowa lost its first four games, and 5 of its

first 6 before stringing up 17 consecutive wins before losing

to San Francisco 83-71 in the NCAA Championship Game.

 

Here’s the Fab Five point count:

 

Bill Logan averaged 17.7 points per game

 

Carl Cain averaged 15.8 points per game 

 

Sharm Scheurman 10.1 points per game

 

Bill Seaberg averaged 13.9 points per game

 

Bill Schoof averaged 10.8 points per game

1950-1951 NCAA Tourney expanded from 8 to 17 teams.

 

1952-1953 Teams no longer waive free throws in favor of

taking the ball out of bounds, The one-and-one free throw

rule is brought into play, although a bonus shot is to be used

only if the first shot misfires. The rule will be in effect except

for the final 3 minutes of play, when every foul will be two

shots. The NCAA Tournament expands to 22 teams.

 

1954-1955 The one-and-one free throw is changed to a bonus

shot is given if the first attempt is made.

 

1955-1956 The two shot penalty in the last three minutes of the

game is eliminated.

 

1956-1957 The free throw line is changed from 6 feet to 12 feet.

grasping the goal is not allowed and a technical foul will be

called.

 

1957-1958 Offensive goaltending is banned.

1948 Olympic Player Ralph Beard
Ralph Beard - Early Professional Men’s Basketball League

A three time first team All American 1947, 1948 and 1949

and a member of the 1948 USA Olympic team, Ralph Beard

was drafted by the Chicago Staggs of the BAA pro team, but

signed later with a NBL pro franchise, and when the two pro

leagues merged Ralph Beard played for the Indianapolis

Olympians.

 

Ralph Beard college stats: 1517 points, 10.9 average per game,

played 139 games, 305 FTM, 489 FTA, .624 pct. Played for

Kentucky University
