Bobby Knight – ‘If I had my way’ – The NCAA Rule Book
In 2006 while coaching basketball at Texas Tech University
Bobby Knight said in a press interview the following in as
many words
The Rule Book
‘The first thing I would do is throw out the NCAA rule book.
Get rid of the sumbitch. I spoke to the National Press Club in
Washington a couple of years ago and I took the NCAA guide
and I dropped it on the table and it sounded like a rocket going
off, it was so heavy.
And then from beneath the podium, I took out the Constitution.
It had around four pages. Then I said, ‘I’m a history major
and I ought to know this exactly, but I think this thing has been
amended 28 times since 1788.’ I then said, ‘It’s provided millions
of people with the best lifestyle that’s ever existed in the world.’
Then I said, ‘this sumbitch guide book has been amended 28
times since noon yesterday and nobody still has any idea what’s
in it.’
‘I really believe you could put all the rules necessary for college
sports in five pages. Just list what you can do. Not what you
can’t do. What you can do and that’s it.’
Indiana's 17 3-pointers pound Illinois 88-57 - Jan. 2002
Hoosiers set Big Ten record
January 26, 2002 - basketballhistorian.com - Online News
Bloomington, Ind. - Before a cheering packed-house of
17,456, the Indiana Hoosiers started raining 3-pointers
after the start of the second half against a helpless Illinois'
defense en-route to a stunning 88-57 win.
Leading the charge were Indiana's fearsome threesome, Dane
Fife, Tom Coverdale and Kyle Hornsby. Fife hit 6-of-7
3-pointers and led both teams in scoring with 20 points.
Coverdale rained in four threes and finished with 16 points
and his running-mate, Hornsby, canned five 3-pointers
which added up to 15 points.
Indiana's sophomore offensive star Jared Jeffries collected
13 points and guard A.J. Moye added 11 more.
'Jeffries was the reason our guys were able to shoot outside
shots,' said Hoosier head coach Mike Davis. 'He causes other
teams to have to help out on defense and that opens up shots
for the guards.'
Illinois was down by only 30-27 when a run of 2-pointers by
Moye, Coverdale and Hornsby led Indiana on an 14-2 run
that pulled them to a 46-35 halftime lead.
Indiana made all of their 3-pointers in the second half.
The Illini had only one player in double figures, point guard
Frank Williams, who had 11-points, all in the first half.
Jeffries, Hornsby and Coverdale each had five assists of the
Hoosiers 23. Jeffries led both teams with 11 rebounds while
forward Archibald pulled down an Illini high 9 rebounds.
'I was hoping it would stop, but it never did,' said Illinois
senior Damir Krupalija in reference to Indiana's hot-shooting.
' It just kept raining and raining. It was a long, rainy day.'
