6 ft 8 inches 230 lbs – Born: Washington DC on 7/21/42 –

College Davidson

 

A fine frontline performer, Fred Hetzel has shown the

ability to score both from the outside and under the

basket. An accurate marksman, he hits seven out of

eight shots from the free throw line. Hentzel was

everybody’s All American in his senior year at Davidson.

Fred had a three-year collegiate scoring average of 28

points per game. Acquired by Portland for 1970-71.

Fred Hetzel owns his own farm in Virginia.

College UCLA

 

Gail Goodrich was required by the Lakers as a result of an

off-season trade. Picked by Phoenix in the expansion draft,

he led the club in scoring and he was named to the All Star

squad of the West in 1968-69. Goodrich is one of the NBA’s

smallest players. Gail was a top scorer on two UCLA national

champions. As a senior he was named first team All American.

Gail’s father was captain of the 1939 USC basketball team.

 

First 5-years stats: 383 Games, 2236 FG, 1641 FT, 1357

REB, 6113 Points, 16.0 Average

 

Best Season so far: 1968 Phoenix Suns scored 1931 points

for a 23.8 average/per game.

The Atlanta Hawks acquired Gary Gregor from the Phoenix

Suns in a trade for Paul Silas prior to the start of the 1969-70

season. The first round draft choice of the Suns in 1968,

Gary Gregor was a standout at South Carolina University. He

led the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounds as a junior and

holds the school record with 35 rebounds in one game. Gary

was named to the NBA All Rookie team in 1968-69. Gregor

is an excellent outside shooter.

George Wilson starred for the University of Cincinnati’s

1962 NCAA championship team and was a first round

draft choice for the Cincinnati Royals. His NBA debut was

delayed as George Wilson was a member of the U.S.

championship team at the 1964 Olympic Games in Japan.

A sound defender, George Wilson was picked by the Braves

in the NBA expansion draft.

Approaching his seventh year in the NBA, Howie

Komives has passed the 5000 point mark. All-City

and All-State as an Ohio Schoolboy in Toledo, he went

to Bowling Green and led the nation as a senior with a 36.6

points per game average. Howie is a ‘hard nose’ player who

has come into his own as a leader and defensive specialist.

Howie Komives is extremely popular with fans.

One of the smallest but effective guards, John Egan was

an All American at Providence and led the Friars to the

NIT runnerup and championship. He’s a crowd pleaser.

Johnny Egan is a sparkplug of the offense.

1205 REB, 5235 points, 8.6 average per/game.

Paul Silas was obtained in a pre-1969-70 season trade with

the Hawks. Paul is a rugged performer under the boards,

averaging in doubles figures in scoring - 12.8 per/game last

season for Phoenix. Showing increased speed and defensive

ability, Silas set six all time school records at Creighton,

including most career points, 1661 and most career rebounds,

1751.

 

First 6-year stats: 440 Games, 1430 FG, 984 FT, 4100 REB,

3844 points, 8.7 average

 

Best Season so far: 1967 St. Louis Hawks scored 1097 points

for 13.4 average/per game, 958 rebounds

Stan McKenzie graduated high school after winning

11 letters in basketball, track, swimming and band. At NYU

he made the All NIT team three years in a row and was

MVP his senior year when he was starting center on the

squad that was runner-up to Brigham Young in the 1966

NIT. Drafted by Baltimore in 1966, Stan McKenzie failed

to make the squad and played that season in Italy.

It’s on defense where Wali Jones excels, constantly

hounding the taller, stronger backcourt men in the league

with his harassing style. Wally’s shooting is colorful too,

with a jump shot that seems to defy gravity. Wally Jones

started for 3 years at Villanova, then was with the Pistons

and Bullets before coming to the 76ers.

5174 points, 10.9 average per/game.

Ron Williams, a superb ball-handler who possesses an

accurate jump shot from the perimeters. Ron provides

valuable reserve strength in the Warriors backcourt.

Williams was the Warriors first round draft pick selection

in 1968 and although he was the ninth player selected overall,

he was the top guard in the selection. Ron Williams is

effective on a drive with a wide variety of shots and is a

sensational passer as well.
