A record crowd of 43,146 jammed the Hoosier Dome for the
1985 NBA All Star Game to watch the NBA’s best players
in action. A high jumping, ‘cradle dunk’ by Doctor J Julius
Irvin set the stage for a spectacular game of All Star basketball.
Earvin Magic Johnson lined a pass that was described by the
television announcers ‘as simply ‘Magic’ and spectacular
even beyond his usual standards.’
Center Ralph Sampson of the Houston Rockets helped the
West win as he led the All Stars with 24 points and 10
rebounds and was chosen the 1985 All Star Game Most
Valuable Player. Magic Johnson, LA Lakers, rang the net
for 21 points and a resounding 15 assists, and was runner up
in the MVP balloting.
George Gervin, the San Antonio Spurs high scorer, delighted the
cheering crowd with a 15-foot rocket shot from his hips.
George Gervin led the league in scoring in four different
seasons, including three straight - 1977-78, 1978-79, 1979-80
and 1981-82.
Detroit Pistons star guard Isiah Thomas scored 17 points in
the first half for the East, including a 3-pointer with a few
seconds left in the first half. Isiah Thomas had a thigh injury
from a accidental knee from an opponent and missed
much of the 2nd half. Isiah Thomas finished with 22 points.
