Led by Coach of the Year Frank Layden the Utah Jazz rolled into the winners circle for the first time ever.

Winning the Midwest Division Title of the Western Conference with a 45-37 record after a poor 

30-52 record the previous season.

In 1983-1984 Adrian Dantley led the National Basketball Association, NBA, in scoring for the 

second time. He led in points with 2,418, in points per game with 30.6, and for the fifth time in

free throws made with 813 out of 946 attempts. On January 5 1984 Adrian Dantley made 28

free throws in a game tying the an old record set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962.

 

7 ft 3 inch 275 pound Mark Eaton, sophomore center, led the entire NBA with 351 blocked

shots, averaging a NBA leading 4.28 in 82 games. He pulled in an average 7.3 rebounds

per game while averaging 4.3 ppg.

 

Veteran guard John Drew averaged 17.7 points per game in his second season with Utah,

his 10th NBA season.  John Drew guided younger Jazz players with his overall team play.

Darrell Griffith led the NBA in 3-point plays, hitting 91-of-252 for a resounding .361 percentage.

 

Utah Jazz Guard Rickey Green excelled on offense and defense. The 6 ft 1 170 pound

playmaker led the NBA in steals, 215, for the second straight year. And, he was 6th in the NBA

with 9.2 assists per game. Rickey Green starred for Michigan University in the mid ‘70s.

 

In the 1984 Playoffs 1st Round the Utah Jazz defeated Denver 3 games to 2. In the conference

semi-finals the Utah Jazz lost to Phoenix in 6 games, 4 games to 2.

A high-scoring player, Darrell Griffith starred at Louisville and made a stunning debut in the NBA

by winning 1980-1981 Rookie of the Year honors, averaging a robust 20.6 points per game (ppg). 

 

The high-scoring Darrell Griffin and NBA scoring champion Adrian Dantley provided Utah Jazz

fans with winning basketball starting in 1983-1984 after 4 seasons of sub-par play since

moving from New Orleans in 1979-80.

 

Darrell Griffin captured the attention of fans and media by setting National Basketball Association

records (NBA) with his hot shooting 3-point plays. In the 1983-84 season, Darrell Griffin set

records with a whooping 252 three-point attempts, sinking a record 91 for a record .361 percentage.

Then the next season set new records making 92 of 257 attempts in 3-point plays.

 

Darrell Griffin posted four seasons of over 20 ppg, including a career-best 22.6 in 1984-1985,

and helped the Utah Jazz make the NBA playoffs 6 times.

The largest television audience ever watched the seventh game of the NBA Championships. The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 111-102. The Lakers and Magic Johnson and the

Celtics and Larry Bird dazzled the viewing public in their first battle since the 1979 NCAA Championship Game. Larry Bird was voted the 1984 NBA Playoff MVP. Bird averaged 27 points per game and 11 rebounds per game thru the playoffs.
