2003 NCAA Tourney Syracuse Wins
Syracuse 79... Auburn 78
East Regional - Sweet Sixteen
It's Anthony in the clutch
Albany, NY - Newspaper Clipping from Chicago Tribune...
by Lew Freedman, Sports Writer: actual Wording as
follows:
Carmelo was too mellow in the first half, but it didn't
matter. He was his usual self in the second half when it did.
Widely regarded as the best freshman in the nation,
Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony, a 6-ft-8-inch multitalented
forward from Baltimore, showed off all of his skills at
crunch time as the Orangemen advanced to the East
Regional final of the NCAA tournament Friday night
with a 79-78 victory over hungry Auburn at the Pepsi
Arena.
Syracuse (27-5) was overwhelming at the start, building
a 17-point lead without the help of Anthony, but looking
every bit the No. 3 seed. Anthony, who averages 22 points
a game, scored no points in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Auburn Tigers (22-12), a No. 10 seed,
who many thought did not belong in the tournament,
steadily whittled Syracuse's lead. When guard Derrick
Bird knocked down a three-pointer with just less than
seven minutes to play, Auburn closed to 61-58 and then
hit four more three-pointers as the clock was running
down, including one just before the shot-clock buzzer.
Syracuse made just enough free throws to survive.
The Tigers utilized the creative play of star forward
Marquis Daniels (27 points) slicing into the lane to beat
Syracuse's zone, to threaten.
But whenever an Auburn player made a big play to give
his team hope, Anthony answered.
Hitting three-pointers, jamming home rebounds and
tossing in the occasional free throw, Anthony was too
much for Auburn. He ended up with 18 points.
Syracuse moves on to the Elite Eight.

Bulter beats Louisville 79-71
The 12th seeded Bulldogs from Butler outside shooting
game chewed up the defense of the 4th seeded Louisville
Cardinals raining three-point hoops and advanced in the
East Regional section in Birmingham, Alabama yesterday -
March 23, 2003. And, much to the delight of Butler's fans,
the Bulldogs canned 14-of-22 three-point attempts.
Darnell Archey poured in 26 points on eight 3-pointers
and two free throws. "I was in the zone," he said...
Indeed he was. His compelling performance helped
the Bulldogs turn around a 24-9 Louisville lead after
ten minutes of play. And, reeking with confidence
Archey's two free throws with only 12 seconds to play,
clinched Butler's first Sweet Sixteen trip in 40-odd years
- since back in 1962.
At the get-go, Louisville (25-7) appeared unbeatable
behind Reece Gaines who canned 26 points for the
Cardinals. However, a 25-9 first-half comeback put Butler
ahead 34-33 at half-time.
One of the highlights of the game came with 3:32 left
in the game: - Bulter's center Joel Cornette leaped over
after the Bulldogs bench to try and grab a loose ball
and had two coolers of Gatorade tip over his feet. With
his shoes soaked, assistant coach Mike Marshall yelled,
"We need some 15s right now"... coming to the rescue
was reserve forward Rob Wells... "I realized I wear size 15.
I got my shoes off as soon as I could."
Scoring:
Butler 79... Archey 26 points... Monserez 14 points...
Cornette 14 points... Lightfoot 14 points... Curry
5 points... Miller 3 points... Sheets 3 points...
Louisville 71... Gaines 26 points... Garcia 16 points...
Whitehead 14 points... Brown 8 points... Dean 3 points...
Stone 2 points... George 2 points... Mohammed 0 points...
Northern 0 points... Dartez 0 points...

Oklahoma thwarts Butler's magic ride - March 2003
The mighty Oklahoma Sooners powered by its swift
moving guard, Hollis Price and Ebi Ere, came out shooting
and stopped the upset minded Butler Bulldogs 65-54. The
6-ft, 1-inch Price scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes of
play as Oklahoma, the Number 1 seed, advanced to the Elite
Eight.
The Sooners, who made the Final Four last year, parlayed
the hot-start by Price with a sterling performance by Ere,
who played with his broken left wrist heavily taped up. Ere
softly dropped in a game-high 25 points, including a
resounding 11 baskets on 19 attempts from the field, mostly
medium range jump shoots.
Butler's star Joel Cornette turned in enough eye catching
performance. He finished with 21 points, grabbed eight
rebounds before getting his fourth foul with more than
eight minutes to play. Junior forward Duanne Lightfoot
Jr. scored 8 points, guard Mike Monserez had 7 points
and 5 assists, senior guard Darnell Archey finished
with 6 points and senior forward Lewis Curry scored 5
points.
Oklahoma ran its season record to 27-6 and the losing
Butler Bulldogs also finished at 27-6.
Kelvin Sampson, Oklahoma's head-coach in his 9th season
with the squad. He credited team work for his team's
success in 2003. Senior Quannas White, Hoolis backcourt
partner, had 4 points, five clutch assists, and 6 rebounds.
Center Jabahri Brown pulled down 11 rebounds and had 4
points.
